Third Entry: The "Being a teacher" awareness

Let us now you opinion about the next statement!

"Becoming an effective teacher involves considerably more than accumulating skills and strategies. Without tying teaching and management decisions to personal beliefs about teaching, learning, and development, a teacher will have only the bricks.(...) Being successful in today’s classroom environment goes beyond taking on fragmented techniques for managing instruction, keeping students on-task, and handling student behavior. It requires that the teacher remain fluid and able to move in many directions, rather than stuck only being able to move in one direction as situations occur. Effective teaching is much more than a compilation of skills and strategies. It is a deliberate philosophical and ethical code of conduct." (Larrivee, 2000)

  1. I think it is true, no doubts. As I always say, teachers need to think about everything. Most of the people think that being a teacher is just let homework and give golden stars everywhere however, the reality is not like that. The responsibility of being a teacher is huge! You should probably think being multitasking in just one class. In fact, your skills, your personality, you attitude, your tone of voice, even the words you say are involved in the teacher package.

  2. I could not agree more. Being a teacher is not a simple thing but it is absolutely necessary that a teacher is able to get moving, and get classes moving. In the process we will face difficulties and we have to be open to face them. A teacher "..remain fluid (...) rather than stuck" indeed that's our everyday and in that sense our way of living as teachers.

  3. It is absolutely true! Teachers should be aware that facing problems is as common as breathing. The bright side of facing problems is that we get to learn how to overcome them when they show up again, as we may build up new strategies for our repertoire. The important thing is to face them happily!

Also, I think we should share with our collegues more often our means to solve issues inside the classroom, because there are very good 'theories' to teach or to handle certain situations, which have not been written down yet but are located on teachers' brains.

  4. I love it! To me, this passage is telling me how important it is to believe on what you're doing, to be aware of why are we doing what we're doing and to never stop learning. I couldn't agree more.

  5. I definitely agree with this quote because it shows that a teacher is more than knowing the language and knowing skills and strategies to be a “good” teacher. I truly believe that a teacher should ALWAYS be a person who listens students and try to help them in their learning process which not only includes what this quote mentioned but it includes affective, social, and cognitive factors that are also involved in the learning process of a student.

  7. I agree with the statement, a teacher has to be an active part of the classroom, he does not only have to know teaching strategies but also know how to use them according to the context. Also, a teacher has to be open minded and try to look for other ways of teaching if the ones that he usually uses do not work with the students, as the quote says, he has to move in many directions because teaching is a dynamic process that has to be adjusted depending on the students´ needs.
